Monte Vista sits in the middle of farm land and one of the major crops of the San Luis Valley is Potatoes. To celebrate the potato harvest, the Potato Administration and the City put on an annual Potato Festival. This year it was on September 12, in Chapman Park. There couldn’t have been a better day for it! Clear skies, warm temperatures and a nice cool breeze. More than 20 vendors set up booths at the festival and among them was Valley Art Co-op. Donna Batzer greeted people and informed them about the co-op Gallery and Shop and displayed some of her jewelry.
Batzer and Valley Art Co-op President, Nancy Harris, also helped judge the potato decorating contest. Young and old spent the morning decorating potatoes then, at 2 o’clock, their efforts were evaluated by a panel of judges.
Besides vendor booths and potato decorating contests, the Potato Festival offered pony rides, a tractor-train, jumpies, live music all day, great food, a cooking contest, and free baked potatoes all under the blue and changing skies of the San Luis Valley!
